A delegation from the African Union Advisory Board on Corruption, composed of Hon. Daniel Batidam, AUABC Chairperson, Hon. Dr. Jean Baptiste Elias, AUABC Member & Mr. Stephane Ndilmbaye, AUABC Documentalist, was in Mauritius in November 2016 on an advocacy mission for the ratification of the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combatting Corruption. During their mission to Mauritius, a working session was held with the ICAC where the ratification of the Convention was discussed. Possible areas of cooperation between the ICAC and the African Union Advisory Board on Corruption and the commemoration of the International Anti-Corruption Day 2016 were also discussed.
The African Union (AU) Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption, adopted in 2003, addresses corruption in the public and private sectors. It represents a consensus on what African countries should do in the areas of prevention, criminalisation, international cooperation and asset recovery. Its provisions criminalise domestic and foreign bribery, diversion of property by public officials, trading in influence, illicit enrichment, money laundering and concealment of property.
The African Union Advisory Board on Corruption is an autonomous organ established within the African Union (AU), in terms of Article 22 of the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption. The Board is the emanation of The Convention and it was created on 26th May 2009 under Article 22 (1) of The Convention. This organ bases its work on the provisions of this legal instrument and in this regard, it is the unique continental organization mandated by the African Union to deal with corruption and related themes in Africa.
